Abstract

The finding out of an unpublished document of the mid-sixteenth century kept at the Diocesan Historical Archive of Catania has enabled us to initiate a research on the existence and operation of a corporation of students, even in the Studium Generale Siciliae that, at least in form, incorporates the characteristics of the collegia of students present in many study centers of northern Italy. The basic features of the collegium scholarium and their links with political and ecclesiastical institutions that ruled the University of Catania are described in this paper. The document transcription is also provided in the Appendix.
