Abstract

The Muslim community in Spain stayed long time after being expelled in 1609. In the eighteenth century, the content of the Tratado de Paz perpetua y comercio signed between Morocco and Spain provoked a serious problem concerning the competences of different jurisdictions in relation to Muslims living at Cartagena (Spain). This problem extended to international relations. The aim of this paper is to analyze the conflict of laws between the Holy Office and the governor of the Shipyard and Marine Department and to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the birth of Jorge Juan Santacilia, the ambassador in Morocco who signed the Treaty in 1767.
